By now we all know the harrowing story of the police shooting of Breonna Taylor, who was sleeping when white plainclothes officers burst into her apartment without warning in Louisville in March 2020.
The tragic case has led to a nationwide reexamination of race and the criminal justice system, along with other recent cases, such as the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery.
At the end of September, a Kentucky grand jury failed to return homicide charges against three white police officers in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor. Many Americans, including many of us in the legal field, were outraged.
I found it my duty to call upon the Attorney General and demand the release of the transcript.
Below is the letter I wrote.
Letter to the Attorney General
Dear Honorable Cameron:
In the Interest of Justice, it is of paramount consideration that you release the Grand Jury transcript relative to the unjustified killing of the decedent, Breonna Taylor. As a public servant, it is your duty to insure transparency, openness, and accountability when the public interest is at stake.
The killing of Ms. Taylor did not affect just “Kentuckians,” but the entire country regarding the flawed two-way legal system as I dare not call it, a “justice” system. The country is at a tipping point where we are all fighting to obtain and relish in a system called “justice.” During your oath of office, you swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and Kentucky. Kentucky is a part of the United States. Contrary to your statement that you do not want outsiders, celebrities, and influencers involved in this case, your decision affects everyone in the country.
We do not have to live in Kentucky to want the best for Kentucky, in that we are the United States of America. However, that is questionable with the current administration that has caused divisiveness, dissection, and confusion with the American people, that unfortunately, you obviously feed into.
If you are a true believer and a defender of the Constitution, immediately release the transcript!!!
I remain sincerely,
Carol D. Powell Lexing
